Afterglow is Kendra Shank's 1994 debut album. Shirley Horn brought Kendra to Mapleshade, a singer-guitarist she discovered while on tour in Seattle. Shirley dug Kendra’s cabaret singer approach to jazz ballads and her clear, slightly folk-tinged voice. One of Larry Willis' favorite Mapleshade albums, he said "As co-producer and accompanist, Kendra's performance was way beyond my expectations. Her song selection was surprisingly different, yet tasteful. The forethought Kendra put into her album was unexpectedly mature for a young singer." Afterglow gives listeners a front row seat for a wonderfully intimate set from a gifted young singer with world-class veteran accompaniment by Larry's quartet -- plus Gary Bartz sitting in for a pair of songs. A Pierre's Picks For Audiophiles, "Photograph" (track 2) is one of our test tracks for in-house R&D.
