Design & Performance

• Rooted Buttress Stands are recommended for speakers up to 10" wide and 14" deep. For larger monitors, use Rooted Buttress 2 Stands.

• We offer 14" and 18" stock Buttress Stand heights. This is the total stand height including standard attached brass footers for hard floors. Upgrading the attached Buttress footers to Megafeet will increase the stand height by 1". Using optional, recommended brass footers to mount each speaker to its column will added +/- 2" to the speaker height.

• Our stock Rooted Buttress Stands are hand finished with a clear satin finish that beautifully enhances the striking natural grain character of our air-dried maple. We also offer three made-to-order toned finishes: Natural Cherry, Deep Rosewood, and Satin Black. Choose your stand height and finish option from the Stand Height & Maple Finish drop-down menu.

• The distinctive character of Ambrosia maple's natural grain coloring and figuring is unique for each pair of stands. Our Amish craftsmen hand-plane matched pairs from the rough-cut, air-dried 4½" maple to remove coarseness and imperfections from the sawmill. Typically this yields precise sizing but, because of variations in the rough-cut timber, the exact dimensions can vary by 3/16".

• The default option for footers attached to and supporting Rooted Buttress Stands is Low Heavyfeet with short sharp points, the best-sounding standard footer option on uncarpeted floors. Be sure to use the 'Pre-Attached Stand Footers' dropdown menu options to choose footers best suited for your floor type.

• To avoid marring handsomely finished hardwood floors, use Radiused Heavyfeet. The rounded bottom incurs only a very slight compromise of sound quality relative to sharp points.

• When installing Buttress Stands on carpet or a rug, use Heavyfeet For Carpet.

• When budget permits, upgrading Rooted Buttress Stands with our far more massive Megafeet—3½ times heavier than Heavyfeet—is a worthwhile investment for listeners seeking the very best performance.

• We never recommend using Isoblocks as footers for speakers or as supports for speaker stands. Any somewhat soft footer allows the speaker to rock which inevitably muddies the bass.

• Now or later, we strongly recommend our brass footers to couple your speakers to the Buttress columns for improved sound. Ordering now will save you 15% on the footers. The discounted price is automatically displayed for each option. Even the least expensive, Low Heavyfeet, will at least double the improvement you gain from Rooted Buttress Stands, compared to stock factory feet or spikes. You can choose from two footer categories.

• Unattached Footers For Speakers are best-sounding. Triplepoint Heavyfeet—or even better, Low Triplepoint Megafeet—will be your very best-sounding options but can be less stable under narrow or lightweight speakers

• We offer Thread-On Footers in sets of four, as usually required. (If you need a different quantity, call (410)685-4618 or email [email protected].) Thread-on footers offer maximum stability whenever stability is primary. They are also most convenient for speakers that are moved frequently.

• Investing in Megafeet as footers for speakers will make more difference than Megafeet as pre-attached footers supporting stands. Of course if budget permits, Megafeet for both will yield even better sound.

Best-Sounding Conventional Mounting For Small Speakers

If you want to mount your monitor speakers on an ear-level stand, we guarantee the Rooted Buttress will make them sound better than any such stand on the market, at any price. The Rooted Buttress is a straightforward column stand, but extreme in mass and rigidity. A solid 12"x12"x4" maple base is rooted to the floor by four massive brass footers. A solid—not hollow—8" x 8" maple column of bridge timber girth mounts on four brass minipoints and is attached to the base from underneath. An extension of our Vibration Control System, the mounted speaker's vibration flows from column into base via the points, eliminating the reflections and micro-rattles associated with flat-to-flat contact areas. The all-solid design is crucial: any hollow metal, wood or MDF stand has internal resonances that seriously degrade a speakers sound, even if filled with sand or lead (which also deaden dynamics).

This all-solid, massive maple design yields even greater sonic advantages on concrete, tile or modern flimsy plywood floors—with or without carpeting. These types of floors are notably poor sinks for vibration. Metal stands transmit almost all the speakers' vibrations down into these floors, then pass the distorted reflections back up into the speakers. This causes harsh, deadened mids and highs while smearing and weakening the bass. In contrast, massive air-dried maple Rooted Buttress Stands are a superb optimized sink. They absorb and dissipate the speakers' vibrations to give you stronger and cleaner bass, gorgeous new warmth and lots more detail than you've ever heard from your speakers.

Rooted Buttress 2 stands feature a 12"x12"x4" symmetric maple top that accommodates larger monitors and small floor-standing speakers. Featuring three rigidly coupled, all-solid layers of air dried maple, the Rooted Buttress 2 is our very best sounding stand for mounting speakers at ear-level. Every pair is made to order using carefully matched, handsomely variegated Ambrosia maple hand-selected by our Amish craftsmen.

Mapleshade Vibration Control For Speakers & Subwoofers

Our Vibration Control System for speakers and subwoofers has three elements. Brass footers drain vibration out of the enclosure and down into an air-dried solid maple stand (Speaker or Subwoofer Plinth, Bedrock, Buttress, etc.). The stand receives and dissipates that vibration; and brass footers rigidly couple each speaker stand to the floor below. We NEVER recommend using Isoblocks directly under speakers or as footers for speaker stands. Here are the fundamentals:

• The physical movement of their drivers and the fluctuating electrical signal currents create unwanted vibrations (through both magnetic and piezo-electric forces) inside every speaker cabinet. Carefully controlled listening tests prove that these internal vibrations muddy the music signal far more significantly than external airborne or floor-borne vibrations.

• Mounting speakers on standard isolating and damping devices (like springs, rubber feet, sand boxes, magnetic suspensions, or air cylinders/bladders) traps the sound-degrading vibrations inside the speaker cabinet, exacerbating distortions to the music signal. For speakers, this phenomenon blurs image focus and creates muddied bass. This is precisely why we DO NOT recommend using Isoblocks under speakers. Isoblocks were designed only to be used as platform footers for electronics mounted on hard surfaces.

• Hybrid isolation/coupling devices like Roller Blocks, IsoBearings, magnetic couplers, etc. purport to serve three essential functions—vibration transfer, vibration dissipation and external isolation—all in one convenient footer. Unfortunately, such all-in-one devices can serve none of the three functions well. They may change, perhaps even improve, sound a bit in one area, but with penalties in other areas, e.g better midrange detail but soggier bass, less edgy treble but slower, duller transients, etc.

Our Vibration Control System For Speakers serves the three functions using three separate components, each optimized for one and only one function:

• First, our brass footers are designed only to cleanly drain out as much internal vibrational energy as possible from speakers. We specifically optimized our footers’ shape, material, alloy, and mass to maximize the vibrational energy transferred out of the cabinet and minimize the energy reflected back. Fifteen years of customer shoot-offs have shown they do so more effectively and sound better than any competing footer or hybrid at any price.

• Second, our solid Ambrosia maple stands serve as the optimal sink for receiving and dissipating the vibrational energy transferred out of the speaker by the footers. Surprisingly, exhaustive testing against every space age damping material and composite used in high-end platforms today shows solid wood (not plywood or MDF) to be better a sounding sink. And, among the wood species available, the same tests show maple to have the most detailed and uncolored sound by a sizable margin. • Third, each solid maple stand is directly coupled to the floor by massive brass footers pre-assembled to each maple base. This approach ensures the speaker and stand are rigidly anchored to the floor or subfloor. We offer four footer shapes, each painstakingly honed to offer optimal sound quality on different floor coverings. This is just one example of the attention to detail that has gone into the development of Mapleshade's Vibration Control System For Speakers.
