Each Unfinished Oak modules is handcrafted from furniture-grade oak, sanded smooth without lacquer or sealer. Unfinished shelves and accessories are ready for DIY staining and finishing, or can be used as is.

Each storage module holds +/- 150 standard albums. Our interlocking construction allows them to stack freestanding up to six high. Taller stacks may need to have their top shelf anchored to a wall. We offer three module styles for LP storage:

• UNFINISHED OAK LP MODULES are our least-expensive storage shelves. These modules are available with an optional slide-in birch overlay to accommodate smaller-than-LP-size vinyl.

• UNFINISHED OAK XL MODULES are a taller version of our LP modules, sized for items up to 17" tall and also offered with an optional solid parquet top.

(Oak Eleganza and Heirloom LP modules are not offered unfinished.)

We offer Media Shelf Modules in two identical height versions:

• 3-TIER MEDIA SHELF MODULES for CDs each hold 177 standard discs.

• 2-TIER MEDIA SHELF MODULES are for 7" records and all other standard optical media including Blu-Rays, DVDs, SACDs, PlayStation, xBox, and PC game discs. Each module holds +/- 220 45s, 100 BluRays, or 82 DVDs.

We offer a limited selection of Unfinished Oak accessories; more are available pre-finished. Use the following solid Top and Base options to transform any stack of shelves into a low table, handsome shelving, or rolling cart:

• UNFINISHED OAK FITTED TOPS only increase height by 3/4" and are significantly more rigid when mounting a turntable or other component on top of LP shelves.

• UNFINISHED OAK TURNTABLE STAND TOPS offer enough surface area for most turntables, dust covers and air-dried maple isolation stands.

• UNFINISHED OAK TOSE-KICK BASES are for stationary stacks. They interlock with any LP or Pass-Thru module and back-to-back Media Shelves. They raise the lowest shelf about 2-1/2" off the floor and make stacks look nicer.

• UNFINISHED OAK CASTER BASES are rated to carry up to 660 lbs, 50% more than the full weight of six loaded record shelves. Easy and convenient to move on either carpeted or bare floors, this base raises the bottom shelf by 4 1/4". Provides easy access when storage space is tight—or roll your favorites out to the turntable.

• UNFINISHED OAK ELEVATED BASES are designed to raise the lowest storage module about 8” above the floor and are rated to carry six fully loaded record shelves (up to 660 lbs).

• BALTIC BIRCH OVERLAYS are a slide-in solid bottom plate that can be easily added to unfinished LP and XL modules to help on sliding records in and out. Offered unfinished, with walnut stain, or opaque Satin Black finish.

Choosing Between Unfinished and Finished Oak

Our unfinished oak modules are the same furniture grade wood and construction as our pre-finished shelves. The 3/4" thick oak is sanded smooth and provided without sealer. Unfinished modules can be used as is or are ready for DIY finishing. If you want our cheapest options, prefer the aesthetic of bare wood, or want to apply a specialty finish, unfinished oak modules will be your best choice.

If you want shelving units that are handsome finished furniture and think you'll save money applying a clear finish yourself, it doesn't work out this way for many customers. Unless you already have the necessary wood finishing supplies, their cost will significantly mitigate the difference in price between our comparable unfinished and finished oak modules. The time and labor necessary to create a furniture grade finish is another important consideration for those who are not woodworking hobbyists. We've spoken to quite a few customers who underestimated the cost, know-how, and elbow grease needed to create a furniture-quality finish and regretted not having ordered modules that were pre-finished by our Amish craftsmen.

For customers with minimal wood-working experience, we hope these insights are helpful in deciding between unfinished or pre-finished modules.

The Absolute Sound

It wasn’t too long ago that I figured my vinyl-buying days were over. By high-end standards my collection was a modest one, maybe 1500 or so LPs. But they were choice—carefully culled over the years, only the best discs had survived. These were stored on classic Per Madsen stackable oak record racks accumulated back in the 1980s. By the turn of the millennium my collection was neither growing nor shrinking, and Per Madsen was no longer building record racks.

However, with the premium vinyl resurgence of the last few years my collection has begun increasing once again. I’ve been playing more records than ever. And as in my long-ago college days, I’ve got batches of records sitting on the floor once more. Long story short, I never thought I’d be in the market for another LP rack system.

But riding to the rescue was Mapleshade. A stalwart of the high end, Mapleshade’s beginnings can be traced to the purist recordings of engineer Pierre Sprey, who built the Mapleshade Studio in 1986 and launched the Mapleshade label in 1990. Achieving renown for their indie audiophile recordings, Mr. Sprey and his partners also researched and developed what has turned into a full-blown catalog (68 pages and counting) and a grab bag of tweaks, cable, racks, and mods.

The racks are constructed of 3/4" finished or unfinished oak or finished Ambrosia maple, and are still hand-crafted by the same Amish family that also builds Mapleshade’s massive Samson racks. They are beautifully sawn with clean edges and immaculate corners. Even in the unfinished oak that I opted for, the smooth grain was like silk to the touch. The racks are stackable and stable up to four units high. At 27", they are wider and heavier than the Per Madsen 18" standard, and the planks are cut thicker—all the better to support the latest crop of 200-gram reissues.

Admittedly I’m no Thomas Chippendale, so the prospect of assembling anything with more than two or three parts was a little unnerving. However these Mapleshades were a snap. The materials arrived so carefully packaged that the planks and end pieces hadn’t shifted an inch within the box. Each rack is made up of two square vertical end pieces, a pair of right-angle planks, and two flat planks, all connected by eight wood screws and four tiny wood plugs. (Pre-tapped holes are aligned and neatly sunk into each rack to accept the wood plugs for righteously secure stackability.) No glue is required anywhere.

It took a mere fifteen minutes to assemble a Mapleshade rack, gather up a few dozen homeless LPs, and slide them securely into place. Aligning the edges of each jacket just as I always have, I stood back and surveyed my efforts and felt a wave of nostalgia. I recollected a time when I nearly gave up my records for a new “improved” format. But now, years later, I’m far more skeptical of such claims. As vinyl continues to be issued and reissued, LPs have never seemed more alive and relevant. Thanks to Mapleshade finding a place to store them will never be a problem again. —Neil Gader
