GALLO ACOUSTICS REFERENCE 3.0/3.1/3.5 UPGRADE STANDS
The Ref 3s were Mapleshade's studio monitor for almost a decade because we're knocked out by their fast and transparent midrange, endless top end, and warm, powerfully extended lower registers—well beyond the best electrostatics. Good as the Gallo design is, its stock base is too narrow give optimal lateral stability and too light to rigidly anchor the Ref 3's elegant steel enclosures. This bottlenecks the full potential of the Ref 3's superb, ultra transparent sound.
Using our old-growth, air-dried maple, we double the width and quadruple the thickness of the stock base, replacing the small steel feet with massive brass Megafeet and Heavyfeet—and doubling the tiltback angle for better transient time-alignment. Result? New solidity in the bass, lovely extra midrange warmth and detail, and newfound treble air and purity. Our upgrade eliminates any need for the add-on Gallo Ref 3 subwoofer amp.
Our Reference 3 Upgrade Stands consist of a pair 15" wide x 15" deep maple bases, available in 2" and 4" thicknesses. Each base is pre-assembled with four threaded brass footers; each pre-drilled to match the Gallo mountings. Includes brass mounting hardware.
ON THE FLOOR MOUNTING CONCEPT
Only low, on-the-floor mounting can make smallish speakers sound so huge, warm and transparent.
Optimized tiltback positioning, combined with super-solid maple base and heavy vibration-draining brass feet, yields amazing transients and details. Percussion and piano attacks gain startling potency. Ditto for bass power and articulation—enough to cross those subwoofers off
your wish list. Surprisingly, the soundstage image floats well above the floor. Here's the physics:
• The highly rigid maple/brass mounting drains sound-muddying vibrations out of the cabinet into the floor far more effectively and cleanly than any tall stand. The improvement in warmth and midrange detail over hollow metal stands is striking.
• Mounting the woofer close to the floor eliminates the sound-thinning mid and upper bass suckout caused by high-mounted woofers (the famous Allison effect). It also provides a 3 db acoustic boundary reinforcement from the lowest bass upwards.
• The direct, rigid coupling to the floor lets the speaker drive the floor at bottom octave frequencies,
thereby greatly increasing the bass radiating area.
• Lastly, the tiltback allows the perfect time-alignment of the leading edge attacks of the tweeter and woofer.
