The acrylic mounted SMMC2 cartridge by The Soundsmith affords high end performance from a moderately priced cartridge. For many of our customers, the high compliance, 400pf version of the SMMC2 is the Soundsmith cartridge that combines the best balance of performance and value. Paired with our Phonophile Nanomount System, you need to spend thousands to exceed the SMMC2's performance.
At this price point, most cartridge manufacturers increase their profit by using a low cost aluminum cantilever and an elliptical stylus. For the SMMC2, Soundsmith uses a ruby single crystal cantilever and a "nude" Contact Line stylus.
The 40 year evolution of the SMMC2 cartridge affords lower EFFECTIVE moving mass than most all MC types of cartridges. Far lower. Why is that good? Because when you lower the effective moving mass, it’s easier to control. If it’s easier to control, the stylus can stay in better contact with the groove walls. That’s good, because if you can’t stay in contact with the groove walls, you can’t hear what’s on the record.
A moving coil preamp is not required. The SMMC2 is a "Moving Iron design" - designed to be used with a standard Moving Magnet preamp. No transformers. No finicky multi-stage ultra high gain preamp required.
